How we got here

Let’s move to Northern Scotland to open a restaurant and art Gallery in the wonderful town of Dornoch! That was our direction in late 2017 and early 2018. The process was underway to completely change course and embark on a great adventure in a foreign country!

Change.

The most constant occurrence in our lives.

It can;

  • throw you in a direction that you never thought you would go;
  • surprise, scare, thrill, disappoint, create, uncover, start, stop, and excite;
  • give new life and extinguish life as we know it in a moment;
  • direct you to a path and an adventure that was meant to be.

THIS change was meant to be.

Well…as 2018 kicked in, Cynzia’s middle daughter, Katalina, and her then boyfriend, Bradley, who were living in Athens, began a search for a country house. They found a quaint farm bungalow that was perfect for them, just east of Athens.

We visited a few times before the move in March, and in so doing, we found that the beautiful large home next door was vacant, and for sale! After a few months of encouragement from our four kids to not move 5,000 miles away, we made an offer on the charming property which had a rich history dating back to its construction in 1920, nestled in the serene city of Maxeys GA.

With its striking architectural beauty, we were attracted by this magnificent gem and immediately felt captivated by its grandeur. It wasn’t just the impressive facade that captured our hearts; it was also the vast grounds surrounding the house, brimming with endless possibilities.

As we explored further, we couldn’t help but envision the perfect layout for a luxurious bed and breakfast. The house offered just the right opportunity for us to blend elegance, comfort, and functionality to accommodate four en-suite bedrooms, each offering a unique and inviting ambiance for our guests. With its timeless appeal and stunning architectural details, the house gave us a rare opportunity to offer guests to experience the allure of the past while indulging in modern-day comforts. Stepping inside, guests are greeted by the harmonious blend of old-world charm and contemporary amenities.

Now, after five years of being Innkeepers, The Gillen House Bed & Breakfast captures the essence of a bygone era with a contemporary touch, offering an inviting spaces for guests to create cherished memories. With its promise of endless possibilities, the grounds reveal a beautiful oasis, where guests retreat to enjoy the soothing sounds of nature or engage in various outdoor activities. The lush gardens, with their vibrant flora and cozy sitting areas, provide a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls or intimate conversations.

This lifestyle change has provided the opportunity for us to enjoy getting to know people from all corners of the world, and to expand our friendships in ways we never imagined. The satisfaction that comes with being Innkeepers has far surpassed what we thought it would be, and our business is thriving because we enjoy the adventure every day.

Come visit and enjoy the “Slow Lane” with us!
